This recording brings together four leading performers. Pianist Louise Bessette, an emblematic figure of contemporary music and named Performer of the Year at the 2024-2025 Opus Awards Gala, lends her mastery to this album, which she also produced and directed. She is joined by cellist Cameron Crozman, renowned for his imagination and sensitivity; clarinetist Dominic Desautels, acclaimed for the elegance of his playing; and the brilliant violinist Mark Lee.
Composed in 1941 during Olivier Messiaen’s (1908–1992) captivity at Stalag VIII-A, the Quartet for the End of Time stands as one of the major works of the 20th century. Combining unique rhythms, luminous harmonies, and colors inspired by nature and spirituality, this score offers a musical journey of rare intensity. This recording is released to mark the 85th anniversary of the work’s creation, conceived under the harrowing conditions of the Görlitz concentration camp—an anniversary that invites reflection on the resilience of artistic expression in the face of tragedy.
